Gesture controlled exhibits utilize the most natural interface of all — our own bodies. Unencumbered by gadgets or electronic hardware, these interface technologies provide a direct connection with the digital experience, deepening our overall sense of immersion.
Tangible interfaces encourage productive collaborations by capitalizing on the simple idea that anyone can lean over and take control of the interface. This enables a different kind of immersion — a deep-dive into the tangible qualities of physical objects, magically augmented by layers of digital information.
These projects augment physical objects with digital technology, giving museum exhibits storytelling superpowers. By keeping the artifact center stage the digital experience gains texture and dimensionality, bringing the story closer to the viewer.
These playful apps make inventive use of touch-screen interactivity enabling users to create their own musical compositions and visual collections. Rework transforms music into generative graphics, providing a tightly choreographed performance heightened by user interactions. The Disney Journey app leverages Disney’s archive of digital content in an immersive game in which users are invited to venture inside their collections, journeying along three-dimensional timelines.
I design for the moments before, during and after an experience, so my client’s guests feel cared and catered for, at every step of the journey. By taking a service designer’s approach, these experiences anticipate user needs, connect discreet touchpoints, and develop a greater sense of immersion over time.
My research into immersive media explores the relationships between analogue and digital media, the mode of interaction, and the story being told. The Reactive Cube reimagines the computer screen using water and a specially prepared oil to transform individual pixels into seemingly tangible objects. The Magnetic Letterpress activates a liquid black mirror that reflects and expresses climate-related ideas, manifesting prophetic voices drawn up from an infinite void.
